I've been trying to attend the WINConference Tokyo for the last two years. This year, the stars aligned for me and even paved the way for an interview with WIN founder Kristin Engvig.

In her opening speech, WIN founder Kristin Engvig primed us to expect "a little magic." And indeed, a little magic was conjured as the Chopin pianist that followed filled Shangri-la Tokyo's Ballroom with an atmosphere of serendipity and dream, grace… and echoes of frustration; transformation can feel slow.

"Abe said let women shine,” said Kristin, stepping back up onto the stage, “but it's 'Aaargh!' like in Chopin's music; sometimes, change isn't always easy." And then, the first note of Gershwin’s “Summertime,” sung by Marigona Qerkezi sent chills down my spine and shivers across my skin. Frisson of excitement, of anticipation and possibility started this day-and-a-half leadership and networking conference for me.

WIN has been in the world for 19 years and in Japan for six years. This year is pivotal. 2017 will be the network's 20th anniversary. A time to reflect on the past; to celebrate inception and growth. I sensed this juncture is also giving people at WIN pause to anticipate its future potential and orientation.

Daughter of a photographer, Kristin has an intuitive sense of light and framing. Reflecting, "in the right light" (also the title of her book) led her to document the WIN project in a short film. I asked Kristin about the hope she voiced at the end of this film: to bring more men into this feminine networking space.

Openness and Oxytocin: The Chemistry of “Magic”

WINConference provides a chance for women and men to come together to share stories and network both purposefully for business and also with openness. This openness creates a lightness not present in traditional work cultures that prize toughness and endurance, goals and competition.

Neuroscientists have associated openness with oxytocin. As brain science becomes more nuanced we find that oxytocin is not exclusive to lovers and breastfeeding babies. Oxytocin is also present, in smaller traces, between people whose conversation is characterized by openness and trust.

Translating more masculine characteristics into this AiShou 相性 chemistry, I asked Kristin if WIN-style networking could, in the future, be inclusive of the more competitive behaviors associated with testosterone, adrenalin and the dopamine gratification of goal-achievement. “Is this kind of inclusiveness part of your aspiration for WIN’s future of having more men physically present?”

Kristin acknowledged the current characteristics dominant in political and corporate life. But, she said with her own gentle firmness, this is not sustainable. It leads to burn out. “When you come in with the feminine values it’s also strong, but differently so. To really win, you have to win-win.”

The push and pull of our talk began to mirror the push and pull of masculine and feminine energies. As Kristin responded to my questions, her hands too talked. Her gestures began to mirror well-practiced flow and exchange of Aikido 合気道, “If you only push, people get tired. You have to receive it. Then you can move it… But sometimes you have to really push.” Kristin exhaled strongly and gestured as she spoke the “P,” invoking at once the push of birth and the targeted force of a Tsuki 突き punch.

I felt magic again. This time combined with the mastery and artistry of integration.

Harmony and Disharmony

Earlier from the stage, Kristin said: “To change you have to shake up the harmony a little bit and stay in the disharmony until there is a new harmony. Is there a way of creating change without do-do-do all the time? Is what we are looking for already there? Is there something you can invite into this change?”

Kristin believes that while the typical workplace environment today simply dismisses (or is unaware of) the value of competencies categorized as feminine, these unrecognized traits will prove to be highly powerful and influential in the next five to 10 years.

“The sense of enjoying the journey, being flexible and not only reaching our ‘target’ mentality. And again, openness – openness to receive which is the secret of real creativity,” she said, identifying high-value feminine competencies.

“Creativity is what is needed from us as we create a world that is yet to become. Linked to that is listening – listening to our intuition and sensory knowing; that deep feeling of knowing what may not be logical nor coming from our capacity to analyze. The possibility to receive and listen to our intuition in order to create is probably the most important.”

Magic is often seen as fanciful, all sparkles and fairy dust. But up close, you’ll see that it relies on raw grit, and grace: finding ways to break the rules, to see beyond the visible, to create as well as to disrupt.

“Accepting the unacceptable reinforces the behaviors. It should never be accepted,” Kristin says. “We use networking to support each other in finding the strengths to act on the unacceptable, and more than anything, to share passion, purpose and possibilities.”
